Kariambady medical mission hospital is a unit of the healing mission of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and it is dedicated to the service of the poor people of Wayanad. Wayanad is the most backward district of Kerala. The hospital started in 1986 at the village Kariambady, situated 5 km away from Meenangady which is on the Kozhikode - Mysore Highway. By the Grace of God it has grown to its present status with all modern facilities.
Wayanad is a hilly region. According to the recent census the population is 8lakhs. There are two lakhs of tribals in 600 colonies. It is estimated that 60% of the population is below the poverty line. Situations were much worse about 4-5 decades back. Facilities for medical treatment were not freely available and transportation facilities were also rare. It was a great relief to the local people when a Mission Hospital (MDM Hospital) was started with co-operation of St.George Orthodox Church under the leadership of the Vicar Rev. Fr.Abraham Mathew Adayakattu and Mr. George M. Varghese Manjalloor.
Christofel Blinden Mission (CBM), is an organisation in Germany which helps to eradicate curable blindness in partnership with charitable hospitals in developing countries. In one of the partner’s meet, CBM urged its partners to serve the people of villages where there were no proper medical facilities. So the Eye department of MOSC Medical Mission Hospital, Kolenchery under the leadership of Dr.P.I.Mohan & Dr.Rajan Cyriac responded to their call and decided to start a peripheral hospital in North Kerala. It was strongly felt that Wayanad with its large number tribal populations and undeveloped agricultural settlement was the most deserving place for setting up a mission of charity. Rev.Fr.Abraham Mathew Adayakattu, Vicar of the St.George Orthodox Church Kariambady took the initiation to hand over the MDM Hospital and its premises to MOSC Medical Mission Eye Hospital Kolenchery to start the peripheral Eye Hospital in Kariambady.
The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Christofel Blinden Mission, Rev.Fr.Mathai Nooranal, Rev.Fr.Abraham Mathew Adayakattu , Dr.P.I.Mohan and Dr.K.C.Mammen are a few among the many who actively participated to establish their project. Philanthropic individuals, estates and companies have generously contributed towards this endeavour.
For better administration and care the hospital was transferred to a local society formed in Kariambady in 1990. This is a registered society under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. The management of the institution is now vested on the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church Medical Mission Kariambady. The head of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church H.H.Catholicose will be the Patron & President of the Medical Mission and the Metropolitan of the Sulthan Bathery Diocese will be the Ex-Officio Vice President. The General Body, Governing Board, Executive committee and various sub-committees takes decision on major policies. The Secretary, Treasurer and the Medical Director took into the routine activities of the hospital.
