MOSCMM KARIAMBADY EYE HOSPITAL

Wayanad is a hilly region. According to the recent census the population is 8lakhs. There are two lakhs of tribals in 600 colonies. It is estimated that 60% of the population is below the poverty line. Situations were much worse about 4-5 decades back. Facilities for medical treatment were not freely available and transportation facilities were also rare. It was a great relief to the local people when a Mission Hospital (MDM Hospital) was started with co-operation of St.George Orthodox Church under the leadership of the Vicar Rev. Fr.Abraham Mathew Adayakattu and Mr. George M. Varghese Manjalloor.

Christofel Blinden Mission (CBM), is an organisation in Germany which helps to eradicate curable blindness in partnership with charitable hospitals in developing countries. In one of the partner’s meet, CBM urged its partners to serve the people of villages where there were no proper medical facilities. So the Eye department of MOSC Medical Mission Hospital, Kolenchery under the leadership of Dr.P.I.Mohan & Dr.Rajan Cyriac responded to their call and decided to start a peripheral hospital in North Kerala. It was strongly felt that Wayanad with its large number tribal populations and undeveloped agricultural settlement was the most deserving place for setting up a mission of charity. Rev.Fr.Abraham Mathew Adayakattu, Vicar of the St.George Orthodox Church Kariambady took the initiation to hand over the MDM Hospital and its premises to MOSC Medical Mission Eye Hospital Kolenchery to start the peripheral Eye Hospital in Kariambady.
